It all depends on your overhead.. mine is rated at like 490 but with the little bit of hosing I have ( as you can see in the photo ) I lost 250GPH. So since the 40 is rated at 790 and you might lose at least 250, that would put you at about 540 if you have at least what I have with tubing.. if you have more it will be less, but still puts you in the middle. If you would like to go less that is fine, but consider overhead.

As far as blueline being better then iwaki it is more of what I have read online. I will publish this from the manufacturer and I don't want to raise any debate. It's just that I have seen the iwaki pumps in person and feel they are much louded then the blueline. I have to actually touch mine from time to time to see if it is running. Granted it has no built in fan so this one ( hd-20 ) is lots quieter then anything I have every seen or run personally.

I am not talking about the higher end iwaki's either.. I am talking about the aquarium pond pumps that we commonly use.

BlueLine water pumps are designed and built by a former chief engineer from Iwaki-Japan. They feature the same flow curves, high head pressure, low noise, and reliability that have made Iwaki the best magnetic drive pumps available. The BlueLine HD pumps are even slightly quieter than Iwaki, with a lower frequency. These units are yellow rather than green and carry a full 5 Year parts and labor guarantee. All seal-free bearings and magnetic drive for 10+ years of useable life.

If for nothing else the warranty is very decent.
