Unhappy Poor Darling Norman

Norman's tank is a coupla months old. I brought him home to it on June 2.

Norman is a very small black pterois volitans. I love his eyes when he peers up at me.

He wouldn't eat his salt water silverfish, or the krill the first few days, so I drove 35 miles to the nearest Walmart (it's all I have to chose from) and bought some ghost shrimp and danio. He snarfed those up. Since then, he's eaten up his danio, and the 3 red tails (not sure what those were at present). I drove south to the Minneapolis area to consult with the Marine guru who has helped me set up my tank. He sent me home feeder guppies, plankton, garlic juice and brine shrimp eggs. Norman has eaten all the ghost shrimp from the first desperate journey. He still won't eat the plankton, krill, or the salty fillets, even with garlic.

I have tried every subtle way to get him to think this is real food.

I grew the brine shrimp. Cute little things. The guppies loved them. Too small for Norman though, for they were like swimming dots in a huge tank. I get the same result when I churn up the substrate.

Today, one of his spikes broke off.

His spines appear to be very floppy. I think its because he needs the fish oils in saltwater fish? What do I know? I was reading up on the internet here, trying to figure out what to do.

You can lead a lionfish to good salty dead food, but you can't make him eat it.

I'm so new to this, but it was my heart's desire to have a marine tank (I love the ocean, but live in the middle of Northern Minnesota!).

Help?

Welcome Aboard ,

From what i read , your fish will only eat live food. , few things , you can put a fish on a feeding stick and try to dangle it making believe its a real fish. Or you can get a few live feeders and trick the fish , by feed 2 live ones and the next a dead one.

good luck and enjoy the site , maybe some else can give other advise , you can start a thread as well if you liike

Default hello

Hello,
I have been away from the hobby about 4 years. I just got back into it again in sept 2009. I chose a finnex 30 gallon all in one. It has the 250 w hqi with 2 actinic t-5 24 w bulbs and a couple moon lights in the hood.

I used to have a 150 reef when i did this last. since I started up the hobby again I have decided to start 2 other builds. a 70 gallon and bringing my 150 back out of hibernation. those builds will be up in the future.
the

the 150 build is also going to be a room build. i am building a den and a living room to house my 150 tank. may take me a year to get it all worked out and completed.

i will post future pics of my tanks I have now and the builds that are coming.

nice to meet you.

I used to spend alot of time lurking here but lately registering corals has become a full time thing. Its cool getting to know alot of new farmers and their LE Corals.I am trying to get back in the groove and back to visiting here on a regular basis.
