Default Bad star fish?

So my girlfriend picked up some of these (I don't remember the name but the pet store guy assured her that they were docile and a great coral, one of his favorites)

Untitled-1.jpg

I noticed last night when I went to my tank that the Serpant Star was hanging out next to it. I watched for a few and his arms were all over the place including parts of the coral. This did not look good so I got a piece of shrimp out of the freezer and coaxed him away from the coral. He was happy to take the shrimp. Today a few minutes ago I realized he was next to this new coral once again, I saw him moving away from it so I did not catch to see what it was doing with the coral. It looks like there might be a couple little polyps missing? I was told by several sites and of course the guys that sell them that these stars were reef safe and would not bother corals.

Is there an exception here?

B heres a word of advice to you....tell the girlfriend you love her very much and appreciate her buying things for your tank but NOT TO DO IT AGAIN. the last thing u need is for her to get something that isnt reef safe or is a hard coral to care for and either have to return it or it just die in ur tank. unless she is doing research on the corals but i would hold off buying anymore as ur tank is still in its infant stages.

was it a little star fish or the bigger ones. either way they shouldnt bother any corals , althou the bigger ones may eat smaller fish IF they can catch them.

It is probably 3 or 4 inches. The other one is smaller. They are both pretty passive though the larger one is becoming more daring and showing itself more frequently.
The girlfriend is much into this hobby as well. The guy at the store apparently had one of these corals and said that it does just fine under the lighting he has which is similar to ours. I guess she figured that if he had his for a year or so we would be fine too. Innocent mistake. I may return it if it developes any issues think I have 7 days or so. You guys would be VERY suprised the majority of the algae is gone. Manually working on it every day and it is nearly all disappeared. Lighting schedule has been greatly reduced. I picked up an emerald temporarily for the bubble algae I had and also bought a Remora C Pro w Mag 3 pump on Friday. Sometime next week it will be here. Will be scrapping the old skimmer and maybe using the maxijet for a phosban reactor once next paycheck rolls around.

RoadKing what negative experience did you have with your starfish in your tank? What kind of starfish were they? Certainly there are species of starfish that are very bad for reefs while others are less aggressive and dangerous.

I had a serpent star that ate my dwarf angels and basslets. They are oppertunist feeder. I actually saw him do it, so I'm not making this up. He now is in starfish heaven when I threw his ass on my hot blacktop driveway last summer.

I am not implying you are making this up, I am just learning that is all. Thanks for sharing this I will keep a close eye on my stars. So far just about everything I have added for cleaners has been reported as dangerous in some way other than my Nerite and Cerinth snails. Kind of discouraging. The stars were not exactly inexpensive since living in the desert salt creatures can be $$$

Well this morning I noticed this frag laying on the ground. The starfish knocked it off I am presuming. It is ok but it is kind of difficult to place it in the tank where it is stable and the starfish is WAY too fascinated by it. I took it back to the pet store and since I could not find the receipt he asked that I trade for another frag. I picked up some shrooms and a multicolored zoanthid frag in return. I wanted this coral but it looked like it needed a lot of TLC and I was not willing to risk it's well being.

Here is a few pics of new frags
