Lion Fish Not Eating
Hey all,
Small problem, I have a lion fish for about a month now and he has been on a guppie diet only. I am trying to feed him krill, silver sides off of the feeding tonges and he just laughs at me, insults my mom, swims away.
This is starting to piss me off, cuz he doesn't even know my mom like that, I mean she did that one movie in college, but you know we were all young once.
Just kidding.
Can anyone hook a freshman fishman up with some advice. I would really appreciate it.
If it works I will send you a copy of my moms video.
Thanks.

Hi what type of lion fish is it? I can only share my experience with volitan lions. Here is how I have ALWAYS gotten my lion fish onto frozen foods. Once they eat the live guppies for the first time in captivity I start feeding frozen silversides & prawns for the next 5 days. If they haven't taken to the frozens I will feed a $1 worth of guppies, and repeat the above. It usually takes a couple of weeks, sometimes more sometimes less. Hope that helps!

Are you shoving the food right in it's face?
I have found that you need to spear the silverside, krill or whatever with something thin (not to noticable to the fish) and mount it so it comes off easy. Now just wiggle it around away from the Lion so it can see it and be attracted to it, slowly wiggle towards the lion but again, don't shove it in it's face. Keep an eye on the fish to see if it's interested. If it's not showing any interest don't keep at it for too long, just try it again later.
Or if the Lion eats a few guppies at a time you could try the above process while feeding the guppies, the hope here is it thinks it's a guppy and goes for it. If this second method does'nt work within a few days, stop feeding the Guppies alltogether. Once it's hungry enough it should go after the new food.
BTW,
Guppies are not good for a lionfish on a steady basis.
We want pics of your mom!

My dwarf lion I would feed live brine to, I would then mix live w/ frozen. He took to it, I eventually lost him for some reason but it worked for me

did you rinse out the live brine ?
That is one reason i dislike feeding live foods, they may hold a disease or parasite and transfer it to the fish

I fed my dwarf lion guppies and minnows for the first few weeks. Then I would feed the frozen prawn with the guppies. The other fish would eat both and eventually the lion thought the prawn was alive and eat it. The lion ate dried krill also this way. It would even swim into the net to get at the guppies. Whe it started doing this I stopped the live food. I would say it took about 2 months.

Depending on the lion fish such as if its a volitan or radiata and your pocket you can try small sized damsel fish the smaller the better, large sized lion fish hunt and eat damsels on the reefs also doin it in conjunction with the above advice. Its also how willing you are to get it to eat. You can also try the saltwater feeder shrimp that live aquaria sells. If its a dwarf species only the feeder shrimp will fit in its mouth or very small fish like guppies. This is a carnivourous fish so you don't have to worry about it eating live fish as long as they are a saltwater species. But eventually you wanna get it to eat frozen untimately in the end. I've also heard of people buying mollies acclimating them to saltwater and putting them in the sump.after they've made it through the night you would feed them like you would any other feeder, but I'm not sure if this is the best way. Saltwater feeders are the way to go.

I never rinsed the brine, My lfs feeds all their carnivores w/ it as well.
I assummed it was safe.
I had a humu trigger in there as well, he was fine, I recently sold him w/ another tank.

THe reason i rinse them out ,is when i open the bag it stinks. Not sure how long they have been in the bag. could be 1 day could be 10. But to be on the safe side , I put them in a net (fine) and pour tank water over them a few time. But i havent fed live food in a few months since losing a sunburst aka fat head a few weeks after feed live food.

Thanks everyone for the advice, but the volitan is still not eating. I guess I am going to starve him until he learns that he is my bitch and not the other way around.

Have you tried garlic? I had a EEL that wouldn't eat anything but live food till the guy at the LFS said to try a little garlic. So I bought a bottle figured it can't hurt,It worked.
The other fish seemed to enjoy it also.
