how important is suface skimming?

Hmm I wouldn't put my money into it to be honest. It's purpose is to eradicate any bacteria/detritus that collects at the surface of your water. The purpose of powerheads/waveaction is to eliminate any surface bacteria/detritus so if you have turbulence at the top of the water then it has nothing to remove. It's just a hob filter with loc lines on it. Nothing too special imo.

Surface skimming is extemely important most of your DOC's are on the surface.

well, i think that if there is adequate surface agitation, then the DOCs are going to be dispersed away from the surface, and eventually taken in from the overflow. thus, surface skimming could help, but if you have the right amount of powerheads for your tank, then you are fine.
