Default Mangrove plant

any one use these in there display tank for nitrate reduction?
i dont have a sump.
do you need an open top tank for these?
tired of doing excess water change$ to keep nitrates down.
any other worthy nitrate reduction methods that actually work?

Hey a little more specs on ur tank would help eg. Tank size, filtration, skimmer and so on. I have mangroves in my sump but my nitrates have always been at zero. How many fish do you have in your tank now. All this would help us get to the bottom of your nitrate problem. I also use a nitrate sponge.

not sure if they are good for your display tank , the roots will grow on the rock and attach themselves if im not mistaken. you would also need lots to make it work properly

John from reefcleaners.org would have better info , he is good in that category

its a 55 gal. w/ 50 pounds live rock, coralife lunar 260 w cfl, 2 powerheads, 2 inch substrate, cpr back pac skimmer and a aquaclear 110 pfilter w/ no carbon or bio rings.
4 chromis, 2 clowns, 1 dart fish, shrooms and xenia.
i know its not the best aquip, but i am not adding any more fish to this tank, so the bio load is low. i do want more corals.....just strugling with stablizing nitrates
nitrite-0, ph-8.3, a-0, nitrate-15

20 pellets a day might be ur problem some of it might be sitting somewhere in ur tank and causing the nitrates if ur snails hermits and fish arent getting to them. do u have any shrimp in ur tank?

maybe the shrimps are molting who knows, they should be coming out soon though. Here is a link to some info on the red mangroves and how to grow them:
ReefCleaners.org - Growing Red Mangroves

You can also get a cheap hang on the back filter and put them in that, it works, but the roots will probably be stunted a bit. I did what you are talking about in a 20 gallon display, worked fine for me. The roots will grow around the rocks, but when they get too large just pull them up and trim them. They grow pretty slowly so it won't take much. You may also want to carpet the bottom of the tank with some chaeto, looks good as a carpet, and works great with mangroves. Good luck to you!

I don't know anyone who feeds every day primarily for the fish. Maybe every day different foods for coral growth, but if you are feeding everyday just for the fish cut it back to every other day. Give it a week with feedings every other day and see if this solves your problem.
