Default What Kind Of Crab Is This?

Hello, everyone,

I am a newbie to the saltwater hobby but am learning so much. I have a 29 gallon tank with live rock that we have had up and running for about 3 and 1/2 weeks. We recently acquired some really good live rock from a private party that had a tank for about 10 years and previous to that we purchased some live rock. We just noticed yesterday that we had a crab of some sort that hid down inside of a hole inside the rock. I have check so many online marine stores and google images to find out what type of crab this is to determine if it might be a future threat or not. However, I cannot find it anywhere! I have seen photos that are similar but none is an exact match. I have noticed that the crab seems to like to hide a lot and not like the light so much.

Can anyone identify this one?

I'm not sure but I'm sure others will chime in shortly. One thing about crabs though is it's better to be safe than sorry.

Feed it to a mantis shrimp.

It looks like you are right, Sadie Lynn. I think it is a rock crab. I took it out of the tank and think I will take it to the LFS. Thanks for the tips, everyone!

Looks like a fiddler crab (there are around 100 species)
There are over 6,000 known species of decapods, so it could be hard to ID them.

I agree with sadielynn most likely an opportunist.
I think you made the right choice by removing it.

Just my 2¢
