18-55 Macro lenses seem to be popular amongst hobbyists. I have a Canon EOS XTi but I dont have any macro lenses, just a straight 55mm lense I shoot with for my close ups...
talk to Twin or Pnoy...

Hey there,
I own a Nikon D100 and use a Nikkor 18-55mm lens for my close ups. I do suggest that you look in your camera manual and see if your camera has a "Anti-Shock Mode". When you are either shooting macro close ups or using a telephoto lens, this mode actually first moves the SLR mirror and then after a small delay, exposes the photo sensor. The purpose for this is to let the shock vibrations from you pressing the shutter button and the mirror moving to settle down before actually taking the picture. Your pictures will be much sharper. Also of course, use a tripod too..
Here are some pics I've taken. Have fun!!!!

^^^ yes it is indeed but carries a hefty price,
is it worth it, YES!
For "macro" on the cheap the pros recommend that one looks at canon "close-up lenses" the 250D and 500D. They are a screw on type and attach to the front element of your lens. It doesn't make your lens a true macro lens but for little over a hundred they are a temp solution.
D designates dual element

Yea, I found the zoom lens (100mm+) have very good depth of field. Make the subject stands out more. Very good effect. This one was at 135mm:

Thank you. It's a 28-135mm I.S. lens (with 1.6 feet macro) on a Canon EOS. I have a similar lens 24-120mm on my Nikon D1 as well. I found that range is a great all around lens. Family pictures, group pictures, close up, scenery, pretty much everything.

THe 28-135 IS is a nice all around lens and it can be had pretty cheap on ebay if you're into canon. I've had this lens before I bought my 24-70 2.8L and the 24-70 tops it all but the price is a whole different ball game. For little over $200 on ebay (last time I checked) the 28-135 IS is one of the better choice out there for canon owners on the budget.
Since the big dissapointment with 5d mkII, I've switched to Nikon and it looks like I'm staying with them. Much better cameras without the roadblocks of Canon. Price wise the Nikons are at premium but I don't regret the move a bit.
