Site Down Time
My website is at a crawl, and the server administrator is nowhere to be found. Time to switch! So if you are trying to place an order today, it might be going REALLY slow. Sorry for the problem, but we are doing everything possible to get it back up to speed.
All the Best,
John Maloney

i just switched to hostgator. I probably should have looked around, but I made the purchase in a panic, (i think it came up first when I googled whm). Looks like the DNS servers are getting updated, and the site will pull through.

let me know how it works for you, I am currently leasing a dedicated server with 1&1 with just a few sites and a load of about 2-3%. Most hosts, even the biggest like godaddy oversell their servers and that is why things just crawl. I am willing to host your site for nominal fee or even a store credit at your store. You'll be able to host multiple domains, have all the space and e-mail accounts required, ftp access etc. In addition you get double adminstration so things like backup are done both by me and the host. I work in IT field and am available to help. Just keep me in mind.

No sorry can't ever go to 1 &1. I hosted with them once, and when I left they wouldn't transfer a domain name out of spite, and I lost it. They are probably my least favorite company in the world. Hopefully you don't have my experience. Thank you for the offer though.

you've made a noob hosting mistake number one. Never register domain names through your host. Keep all of your domains with the registrar (godaddy, netsol etc.) and host somewhere else. Anyhow, you wouldn't be hosting with 1&1, you'd be hosting with me.
Enjoy your new host, hope you'll be 99.9% satisfied (nobody can gurantee 100% uptime). Your site seems up and running and is very responsive, good luck.
If you only have one site, I strongly recommend these guys. Monitoring one site is free.
SiteUptime - Website Monitoring Service
You'll get e-mail every time your site doesn't respond/is down and another following up to let you know that it's up again. This will allow you to see how often and for how long it's down.
Bernard

Oh I have like 20 different sites I host with whm, but I will get that for the more important one thanks for the tip.
Yep, definitely a noob mistake! It was my first website, took me forever to build and they nailed me on it. The name is so important for getting biz back to the site, I just gave up on trying to build the business again.

John, if u want a great hosting service, try canaca.com, they are just amazing.
I pay $10.00 a month, and I get 200gb of website storage, 5 terabytes of bandwidth, builtin php, MySql, Perl, and lots of other programming goodies. Plus, they have a great uptime, never have had my website done in the 5 years I have been with them.
If you ever change plans, I strongly encourage you to go with them.
xoomercom, if you are leasing a server from 1&1, and it is not on your own internet feed, it will have to be going through their internet line. From my experience, a dedicated server is a server that you pay an extra fee, and no one else may use it, but it is still hooked up to 1&1s internet uplink.

^^^ Correct, and that is the point.
Unless you want to spend hundreds on multiple connections from different providers, maintain battery backups, generation and equipment (very expensive proposition) there is no better solution than a dedicated server. The whole point of a dedicated server is that you and only you use it. All the resources are available to you and only you. If you buy shared hosting the server is jam packed with sometimes 200-300 websites and things just either slow down or time-out as the server is unable to process all incoming request. I have a private (PHP based) forum runnin on the server with page processing time around 0.1 s on average. In the support section I have heard complaints about shared hosting package with just about every provider there is. There is simply no way a shared package will provide enough resorces to serve hundreds/thousands of visitors. Most "real" forums run on multiple dedicated servers to keep up with traffic/activity.
As to the hosting companies and their inflated packages, it is only a mind game. Hardly anybody will ever use what they sell. We all know that even an extensive website does not take much space. My ink store is about 54MB. I've seen packages as big as 1TB of space offered at less than 10 bucks a month. These companies know that there is no way anybody will use that much space or they will not be able to make andy $$$. Most folks get excited about it only to use about 0.01% if even that much in the long run.
With current prices of about $200 per 1TB hard drive, if one was to use all the space aloted it would take the company over 24 months just to recuperate the cost of that hardrive. THat wouldn't include, electricity costs, cooling, data provisioning, support, equipment upkeep etc. not to mention the profit.
As to your website being up 100% for last 5 years, it's simply impossible.

Hey Sulfur you got a website? What is it, I like techie stuff. I am a joomla! guy myself, love it after they left mambo. Won't use any other packages, I am so comfortable with Joomla!. What do you use to program with? Don't tell me you are running your own html... Too much time and effort!
