that depends on what fish you are keepng, and if you are prepared to top off regularly. If you get lazy with that the increase in salinity can do more damage then increased temp from glass top.

Take the top off and put egg crate on the top if you are trying to prevent fish from jumping although I have nothing on my top and it's just fine. The glass top restricts the water from becoming aerated = Bad

Btw you can add sad to your tank little by little as long as you don't overcloud it. Pick up a bag of southdown sand from your local hardware store (hd,lowes) and make sure it is completely silicate free.

Cool everyone for the advise... I will be getting a JawFish so I think I will just keep it on and have the back chamber open only, so the gas exchange will be happening in that area only...

Keeping the glass tops to keep a fish in, and leaving the back open for gas exchange is contradictary. The fish can still jump out the back. It happened to me before my canopy was delivered. I had the glass tops on with the plastic strips with a very small hole in the corners, and the fire fish & a wrasse jumped.
Two of my tanks are covered by screen to keep the fish in, and enable the gas exchange!
My fowlr has the glass tops! PITA to keep the tops clean of salt creep & dust, and I also see red slime on the back glass & pumps. No red slime on the sand bed. Have to keep the glass tops due to the eel!!!!

I would normally agree with reefers statement.. However, in a 12 gallon the back chamber plastic is higher then the water level and with the glass on the top of the tank the fish cannot get to the back chambers unless it is about a 1/2 inch in size and times it just right. I feel having a glass top limits uv and also gets dirty fast thus limiting the amount of light into the tank. Don't use a barrier unless you are either lazy to do a top off every other day, or you have fish that WILL jump out of the tank.

In the case of jumping fish I also agree with reef to use the screen cover. A DIY for the cover can be found online at nano-reef or it is possible someone already linked it here. Check it out
