Default How long do YOU think ---

How long do YOU think it take for a REEF tank to be fully Established after you have cured the rock .. to be a bit more clear , Not how long you can add a fish or coral.

Probably means established in the means that the bacterial colony is established, the water chemistry is stable, and reef microfauna is growing and coral/fish growth is regular.

No disease

There are just too many variables that could happen during any of these time periods to make a decision. Rarely do you see a tank that does'nt go through major changes in the frst year or two of being set up.

I think if you did set a tank up properly for your maintenace schedule from the get go and leave it alone, it would be pretty much established within the 1-2 year mark. As this rarely happens, i'm voting 2-3 yrs. I honestly feel the longer a tank has been running the better.

Established = reefer does his job

It all depends on the person taking care of the tank. If usual maintenece isnt kept up, no matter how old it is nor how much livestock you have, your tank isnt established.

well, i have to disagree. the tank may be established even though the maintenance is not followed. the tank just wont look good. maintenance also tends to loosen a bit when the tank is matured, pertaining to water quality monitoring(I.E. twice a month versus once or twice a week.

I have always had three levels of reef status. First is getting a new tank through the nitrogen cycle which can vary greatly from tank to tank for the amount of time it takes. Tank (A) may have been started with cured live rock and will finish the cycle before tank (B) that may have been started with fresh uncured rock.

Once the aquarium is cycled is starts begins to establish it’s self. This process also varies from tank to tank, depending on maintenance, equipment, how fast things are added to the reef, how well is it being maintained, how much is the owner (messing) with it and more.

Once the tank has established it’s self it then begins to mature. The maturation process also varies from reef to reef.

I always tell people not to compare there reef to any other reef, they are not the same and there individual personalities are different. It is like comparing children to one another, every one is different and should only be compared to them selves and there growth and achievements.

Well I said 2-3 just because established to me means all your stock is growing good and your sps bases are growing like crazy. But if where just talking about established on a micro level then 6 months to 2 years. Or when the tank owner finally figures out how to maintain a stable eco without flucuation. In my book when your growing bigger than half dollar size coraline. Watching a new acro or something you put in your tank take hold and flourish is my idea of a good eco.....
