As for your problems, I'd bet the farm you removed the PO4 to quickly. You need to bring it down at a moderate pace. Once you get it down, DO NOT let the GFO get exhausted before replacing it, it is better to replace the media sooner than later as if your PO4 starts to rise before you change the GFO, it will only strip it out quickly, again repeating the same results you just had.

how often would u suggest? and ur probably right i did remove it to quickly. but i still have that bryopsis in my tank i pull them out but they grow back like u wouldnt believe. i thought no ph04 meant no phosphates for them to survive on

I change mine monthly, but everyones tank is different.
As for your Bryopsis, did you ever try the Lettuce Nudibranch like I told you?
I also read somewhere on RC that people are having success with killing it off by raising their Magnesium levels. I think it was in the "New to the Hobby" section.

Reef Central Online Community - Finally an easy solution to bryopsis!
great read. lettuce nudis dont eat bryopsis. they suck out the chloropast thats it and it still grows. that thing is like a cockaroach. it can survive a nuclear fallout

I watched a LN mow down a 4" patch of Bryopsis in my tank in one day. They do work.

so if LPS thrive in nutrient water would a protein skimmer be a bad idea?

hey i'm sooo cornfused with all this salt talk. But on a brighter note.....if you think you made a mess out of my front yard you should see it now. It looks like Rommel and Patton held a 200 lapper with their tanks. See ya at Steve's! That is of course if Kris does'nt pop befor then. She's lookin large and in charge! Don't forget June 3rd TOTH USAC wingless sprinters!!!!!!!!

High nutrient water does not mean you should not have a skimmer.
when you are running a skimmer, you are removing organic waste that may, and will, break down into the nitrogenous waste in teh order of ammonia, then nitrite, then nitrate. Protein skimmers also remove other waste that is unwanted in tanks.
I think that high-nutrient water would be referring to calcium, iodine, iodide, and the other chemicals that are found in NSW at natural levels.
Just my opinion, I think that a skimmer should be used for any tank, no matter what livestock you have in it.
