Default New Chaeto species!

Okay so the Chaeto we normally use in the hobby is one of the many species of the Chaetomorphia family. I found a new species of Chaeto that is much more dense, (the kind we use is as dense as a scouring pad, this stuff is as dense as a brillo pad). Much shorter hairs on this one, and they are thinner... I am testing one some right now, and I should have the name up by the end of the night. When I find it in the wild it dominates the Chaeto we use, which is very sparse. This makes me think it is more prolific and therefore a better filtering candidate. (It is not as good looking as regular chaeto though). I put some in a filter sock, and into the back of a hang on filter. Hopefully this will become a great filter media for hang on back filters, and for sumps. More testing needed for results, but I am excited.

Is that the story we are going with? I might actually do that, because I am having a hard time finding nitrates. I had to pull the stuff from one of my tanks to get some nitrate readings, but I want them to get to ten before I use the new stuff to see how good it is.

good idea.

you could always dose this stuff called flourish, by seachem, which is a freshwater plant supplement i use. that has nitrates in there, maybe about 10-15 per 10 gallon dose, so you could put it in a separate tank, or put it in your macro tank. if you give me your addy, ill be glad to send you a bottle.

I would love to try out some of this stuff. I have two different types in my sump now. A course one that seems to be dominant and a finer type. When you say it doesn't look as nice, what do you mean, color, texture, ???

Who cares what it looks like?

Face it, no one puts Cheato in there tank for the look of it, if that were the case, there are much nicer looking Macro's available. We all you as a nutrient sponge. The faster and or more nutrients it can strip from our tanks without causing problems (Caulerpa) is all I care about.

Caulerpa is a big problem. A lot of newbies are always asking me if I can get it for them, and I try to tell them the ph problems, (never mind the break down and nutrient problems), and they just don't get it. THere should be a "caulerpa is one of the worst things to put in your tank thread". I think I will put it next to my I got 4 kinds of caulerpa growing in my tank thread.

Hey Deep, we find all different kinds of little critters, but we hypersalinate before it goes in the tank to kill them off in case any are undesirable. I learned that trick from a customer. Some are copepeds, but some are isopods, best no to take any chances you know.

I think the other kind of caulerpa looks great, but that is just me. This one has finer hairs and really looks like a green brillo pad.

Do you guys have any good pictures of the new species of Chaeto yet? Any macro shots showing the density? I would love to see these for comparison to the Chaeto that i am using...The best description I can give for my chaeto is a brillo pad..it grows so desely together it seems to be just like a SOS pad or a sponge...

Thanks for the information that you have passed along, it would be great to find even better nutrient sapping algaes to clean out our tanks with.

Have you done any experimentation with lighting needs for this new species as of yet?

Is it really as dense as a brillo pad, or is it more like a scouring pad? I think the name of the new one chaetomorpha brachygona. It may take a few days for a picture, I am just not that big on them. I will get one when we decide to sell it though.

It is completely dense...I am amazed at the thickness of it...a SOS pad would be the best comparison to the look and feel of it...

oh maybe we got the same kind. do you have a pic? we are using a walmart bulb that came with our 10 gallon kit. That is my down and dirty bulb, thanks Bill for making sure I didn't throw it away. I use it all the time now as a bulb when I don't want to buy a good one, and keeps the macro going.
