Caution !! For Reefer's
Reef Central Online Community - I learned about Zoanthid toxin the hard way......
I feel sorry for this person , going thru what he did. I wish him a speedy recovery, and al the best
I hope ppl will do more research before experimenting. Some of the sweetest , colorful looking things can be the deadliest of them all
ZOANTHIDS , They shouldn't be over looked. They hold one of the strongest toxin to us and our loved ones , Including animals.
Be careful when handling or fragging zoos. Use goggles ,gloves and a mask. keep your children and pets aways from them when doing so. wash your hands , face after fragging or touching them ...... it can not be said enuff.

"You hear stories and you think, "wow, that's aweful.......but that won't happen to me". Well let me tell you.......I thought the same thing and now I'm in more pain than I care to imagine. BOTTOM LINE - BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU HANDLE ZOOS.......THEY ARE VERY DANGEROUS AND IT CAN HAPPEN TO YOU."
That's exactly what I was thinking when I read it. You hear the stories but never someone's first hand account.

I just had a zoanthid squirt me in the eye about a month ago. I didn't think anything off it until the next morning. When I woke up the next morning I couldn't open my left eye. I had to use my fingers to pry it open because of all the crud that sealed it shut. I went to a local ER and they refered me to an eye specialist who flushed my eye for about 45 minutes and then applied some eye drops that numbed my eye. The eye doctor gave me some eye drops that they treat pink eye with. I used them for about 3 days until my eye felt better. I have to admit that even after all the pain and running around I went through I fragged again without safety glasses .

every time i forget to put on gloves with zoanthids, they get me good. I relate all of my symptoms to that of ciguatera, but they are much worse. all metal that i touch is like a knife pricking your finger, really hurts. also, any water that i touch, contaminated or uncontaminated, feels like its really hot. then, for the next few hours, migraine out the wazoo.
I really dislike zoos for this, and if it werent for their color, i wouldnt put a thought to them.

If you know this happens and why it happens, would'nt it make sense to have some gloves by now?
Then again, who am I to talk, I've been stung by Bristleworms so many times and I still don't wear gloves, but they just itch, it's not even painfull.
I'm sure I'm playing with fire though.

ahh psychographic, that was back in the day that i thought mushrooms were LPS, power filters could filter a 40g reef, and that my incandescent bulb was enough for my ephyllias. beleive me i have advanced, and gloves are now with me at all times. never been stung by bristle worms though, they look like they could put a hurting on someone

Is this true of all Zoanthids? If so I should probably start wearing gloves when handling them in my frag tank..I have about 15 different color variations of Zoanthids growing in there and have moved them all around several times..the only possible reaction I believe I may have from them is that it looks as if someone has taken a razor and made minor slashes across my thumb and firts two fingers on the my right..I wondered where these came from, I thought maybe it was just from working on my bike... MAybe its from handling these Zoas...From now on I guess I will be handling them only with gloves...What kind of gloves are suggested..like the medical grade surgical gloves..the yellow dish washing gloves...????

Now just imagine if your child got a hold of some? For those of you with little ones of course.
There has been a long running thread in one of the other reef forums about this - I'm surprised it's just getting here now.
I think it's like keeping a loaded gun in the closet.
And I always end with this note:
Just think of the countless people that end up in the ER sick or DOA from something but the docs could not really find out why. And in an autoposy - will the coroner really look for coral toxins? Not everyone is Dr. house. More than likely they will look for disease, common poisons and drugs but to look for toxins from corals - I doubt it.
My hunch is that Zoos have claimed plenty of hobbyist lives but it remains undocumented since it would be the last thing to look for - after all, you get the toxin, you go to work, friends house, play or whatever and you get very sick or worst - well, those places aren't the ocean so why would anyone think corals?????
let the buyer beware.
