Default Does any one use mechanical filtration?

Just wondering does any one use mechanical filtration ( ie. Canister filters, etc) on their systems besides just siphoning off detris when doing water changes? I’m finding a lot of detris/rock blow off acuminating in my refugium and trapped in my cheato. I have a 120 aprox 80 lbs rock , maybe 5 med fish, feed twice a day flake in morning and frozen at night.
I guess what I’m asking is how do you SPS people keep your tank water ,(maintain low nutrients) for sps growth ?
Thanks
chuck

i use a sponge that is fit as soon as water enters my fuge. i also have plenty of powerheads that dont allow debris to accumulate on the sand.

Most people use filter socks on their drains to trap detritus that enters the sump.

I use filter socks...I hate filter socks, but I use them...they keep my Sump Floor nice and clean...also its amazing how many baby stars and bristleworms get caught in them...

Thanks..everyone.. I guess I'm going to switch to using filter socks.. stupid question ...do these stay out of the water totally or is it ok if they stay part submerged and long as the output from the tank doesn't overflow over the top of the sock. my refugium is a 29g tank and there's only about 7 -8 inches clearence from the water level in the refug.
where do you guys buy them from? I think I saw a post or some link from someone making brackets the socks hang in..??

thanks
chuck

I keep mine about 75% submerged, and well below the rim of the sump. You should switch them before they over flow and then wash them in the washing machine. (no soap).

I have them, they are not on my web site yet. 7" dia 100 micron $9.99ea 4 or more with free shipping, 4" dia $5.99ea 6 or more free shipping.
