Life span of a reef trendy item??
So I got to thinking. How long do YOU think something's desireableness/trendyness lasts? Reading over Jose's(JF2381) for sale thread I noticed the possum wrasse. I had completely looked over it when i originally read it, but upon going back I saw the $20 price tag. Now back in the day, when i was like 17 18 and just starting out in my reefing, I remember when this fish was first introduced a few years in. It was THE must have reef safe wrasse for a smaller tank, even for big tanks. It's price tag was $120 give or take a few $20. Then I was out of the hobby for a while, still reading up and looking a people's tanks, but not really paying attention to prices till i saw this. I did a quick search and found most online retailers were at $35-45 for this fish.
On the coral side of things, just as i was taking down the tank and taking a break for a bit acans were full on their climb to the top. Anything that had a spec of red was $50-100 a head. I just picked up my rainbow(white, red, orange, green, purple, faint pinks) for 80 and it has I don't know, 20 heads. So my question again is, how long do YOU think a coral/fish stays at the top till people are either tired of looking at it, or ther's something new and more of a must have than the last hot item?

That is hard to say really. Lets take acans. they dropped in price so much , cuz every body and every supplier starting getting them in and flooding the market with acan , prices drop.
same with the Australian livestock. It came out not long ago , and was expensive , now the prices drop , again everyone has them , they are all over the net.
I say 1 yrs time for it to die out . But funny thing , it can becoming trendy again later on

Yeah I put in 9 months. As soon as it's hot on a forum everyone waits a few months before the flood starts.
Dendros were it for a few months till duncans took over their spot.

I think zoos still have their appeal though. They are still the easiest to get of a rare morph since a polyp is maybe 50 for the newest of the new but they grow pretty quick. Some hold their value long after their time is up, but as new morphs are found they are the hot zoa for the month till the next few are out.

it really like anything , ,, some thing keep value some dont. like a old car , only get more $$ as it gets older. the less the suppliers bring in of the same corals , the more the coral will be. once it gets fragged in passed around by hobbyist , the price gos down. may still hold value . but price gos down

for the most part the slower the grower the more money it comands because the supply of frags from a specific colony is slower to market. Then once it has spread wide enough the craze begins to fade because everyone has it. PD palies, Nuclear green palies and duncans grow like wild fire so the market gets flooded quicker
