Home depot has timers for about $10 , i would get one a reduce your lighting to 8 hrs a day. you can alos time it so it turns on when you get home or a few hrs before so you can view it.
Can you gives us your parameter of your tank, nitrates ,phosphates etc ...

You need to do a 40% water change which should drop your trates by half, then 3 days later do another 40% and again it should drop by half. Keep doing it until you get your nitrates below 10. Siphon off as much crap and algae as you can while doing the water change. Be sure to use RO water or Distilled ( you can get distilled or RO from walmart at 68 cents a gallon if you can't make it yourself that fast.
Don't know much about your tank but us smaller tank guys like purigen as it remove nitrates, ammonia and nitrites from your tank 100ml bag in the back chamber.
That is my opinion and has worked for me and many in the past. Get those trates down and your algae problem should disappear. Then go back to a weekly water change schedule and if you are feeding fish drop it down to every 3 days for a little while until you get on track.. Don't overfeed.

reef man, follow mynd's advice. Also get two containers with a little water in them, and pull as much of the hair algea out as you can. Put all the hair algea you pull out in one, and rinse your hand in the other before you stick your hand back into the tank.
By the way, I'm not sure, but I think we discussed the PBT in a 55 gallon tank not being a good thing. If you are not the one this was discussed with please do a search for the advice given. Also, although a manderin is a small fish it also does not belong in a 55 gallon tank because of it's nutritional needs. Not trying to be a tang or manderine police. Just concerned for their health. Peace vey
