oh! Wait, Awi, are you thinking that I was saying calling them frags/little people is offensive/bad??
No no, I'm seeing it as a way that coral has completely taken over every aspect of our lives and I'm happy about it. So 'bad' in a funny, has coral/the hobby become such an addiction (my friends already think I'm crazy kinda of thing) see big smile |

Steve thanks for the pics. Your kids are beautiful! Man do they get big fast. It was like yesterday your son was born. He's about three months now right?
I have two daughters 2yrs old and 1 yr old so I know you know what having no time for anything means which I know I speak on behalf of everybody when I say thanks for having this little swap at your place during this time. ![]() |

Just to update my tank thread... 3 days ago I have seen my Acans and chalices showing some skeleton . I checked my parameters and found that my alk went down to 6 . I slowly raised my dosing using LM III and within a day it went to 7. Lastnight when I checked all my sps are fine and Calcium was 440 ALk 7.8 . This morning I went to check and Oh my... My colony of Granulosa half of them bleeched overnight. I went to inspect all my SPS and that is the only one that got affected with the sudden drop/Change. Well sometimes sh!t happens....

@Pnoy, An ALK of 8 is not good. You need to raise it to a number between 10 and 12. Alkalinity is created by carbonate and borate alkalinity. Borate alkalinity comprises about 2.8 DKH of total DKH at any given time. If you have a total DKH of 8, that means your carbonate ALK is 5.2 and is way too low. You want to get your total ALK up to about a 12 so that your Carbonate ALK is about a 10 or a 3.3 meql.
That would mean that you need your tank to have a 4.3 meql ( depending on your kit ) at all times or a 12 DKH. DKH test kits test for total ALK and do not consider borate alk, which is not contributing to Carbonate ALK ( which is needed to skeletal growth and coralline growth in your tank. I suggest using a seachem reefstatus magnesium test kit ( which includes alk ) as it gives you the best ( IMO ) understanding of alk levels in your tank.

I am glad that you have not had any problems. I am more interested in the tank being optimal so that growth and health are optimal. I was not putting down your tank parameters as we all know your corals are insane. What I am saying is this. I don't think it was the dosing that caused the problem. I think it was the low alk that may have. If you kept your tank at 12 DKH or 4.3meq/l you would never have a drop to 6 ever again and chances are that the lowest it would get would be around 9-10 unless you forgot or just stopped checking. At least at a 9-10 you are still pretty optimal and the corals would not be affected as much as they are at a 6.
My response was given with the best intentions. Just a suggestion for the master. ![]()

Thanks for your input steven and appreciate you taking time to respond. Yes the cause of the tissue loss and rapid bleaching was due to ALK. I am trying to fix it and yes will probably try to raised it to 10 but will take it slow. I am just glad that only 1 sps suffered and that is a given that "Deepwater Acros" always react to a sudden change. I will update with pics tonight...
