Default Hydor Koralia SmartWave Controller :: REVIEW

Since I am a big fan of Koralia pumps it was only logical to buy the Hydor Koralia SmartWave Controller; 2 actually. At about 60-70 bucks retail its the cheapest controller that actually works as advertised.

This controller works with Koralia Magnum 5, 6, 7, & 8 Pumps which I use throughout the tank as well as 2nd generation Koralias 1-4.

The built quality is very nice and the housing comes with a little mounting loop so that it can be mounted inside your stand using a single screw. The product feels very solid. The unit plugs into the outlet or one can plug it into a switched APEX outlet if you wanted to further control day/night modes or switch off powerheads during your feed or maintenance modes.

I have my powerheads (via this controller of course) plugged into a large APC UPS unit so if all power goes out the tank will still get good random circulation throughout for hours until I scramble to bring and hookup large batteries to an inverter.

At the bottom of the unit you have 2 short cables (outlets) where you can plug in your powerheads. Keep in mind that each of the outlets can handle up to 100Watts, so that you can actually connect multiple powerheads per outlet, as long as their combined load rating doesn't exceed a total of 100W per outlet. As an example, using a Magnum 7, you can controll 8 powerheads with this single controller.

The controller has an on/off switch as well as 2 dials that you can set its operations with.

The first dial operates between 3 modes: feeding, all pumps are off, alternate where it alternates between outlets and third mode where both outlets are set to operate in on/off mode based on set interval.

The second dial basically sets time or frequency if you wish, that the powerheads should either alternate or go on/off at.

I currently have 4 Magnums hooked up to two separate controllers. I could have easily hooked all 4 to 1 controller, plugging either 2 and 2 per outlet or in combination of 3 and 1.

I chose to go with 2 separate controllers because I wanted to create more random flow patters and it really worked.

On controller 1 I set the 2 powerheads (which are on the left side of the tank) to alternate every 45 seconds. 2 other magnums (on the right side of the tank) are connected to controller #2. These alternate about every minute. This creates very random and turbulent currents in my 180 Gallon tank and this was the idea. My softies love it and it looks very natural, fish have no problem navigating the waters although I lost a small sun goby because it thought it was cool to hang inside a powerhead that was briefly off between the stages.

Needless to say, great controller, very affordable, very solid.
If you own Koralia Magnums, I very highly recommend it.

BTW, there is absolutely no clicking, stuttering or rattling on the powerheads when the go on/off as I believe the controller uses soft start feature.

I am VERY HAPPY with this purchase and the way it has performed over past 6 months. This is pretty much set and forget device.
