Default Need advice on keeping xenia

I am getting some blue xenia this week and I need advice on how to be successful keeping the stuff alive and growing. I have a 12 gallon cubemaster nano, and the water I use is from the ocean--not mixed. Any secret supplements or anything to get this stuff growing like weeds? LMK

I think if you are using natural sea water , you are a.o.k and since water is not an issue , just do a 2 gal water change every few days , that should give it all the supplement it needs , Or you can place in a secret place in one of your dives and let it grow int he ocean
as for lighting i thnk they like strong light , buti could be wrong. ill do a search on it

I know they like iodine . but again , natural sea water should everything in it

even though natural sea water has nutrients you should still add supplements. Iodine especially stromium.....

I really like that idea of putting it in the ocean... Seriously it sounds like something that I will consider, but how do I collect "frags" when it starts to grow? I know absolutely nothing about fragging corals or collecting them, etc. Please tell me how it is done! I saw one post that suggested using a green parrot with a fragging knife that is popping out from between someone's crotch, but I do believe it was just a joke. Please confirm this is not how it is done
(seriously, how do I frag it?)

1st i would put only half in the tank and half inthe ocean , just in case one doesnt make it.

to frag it , just place it around a bunch of rubble, If it takes off. It will grow on the rubble and you can just take it off. If there is a piece still hanging on to another rock , Use a razor blade and just jcut it. its as easy as that.dont worry they wont bite

Thanks! This is really exciting for me and I hope that it takes off! This was the post of the coral fragging bird that I was mentioning... I knew that it couldn't be real. I knew it.

i used to have xenia growing like ad in my tank before i got a skimmer. it may like higher nutrient levels. to frag iike ronen said - either let it spread onto other rocks or simply cut it (i've used either a scisor, or sometimes even just ripped a piece off by hand - but that is more difficult as it is very slimy)

If it's a Blue Cesp, it will grow a "Branch" of of the main stalk and frag itself. I got one a couple of months ago from a new sponsor here, Mr Coral, and it has grown 2 new stalks already.

Just a note Xenia are HORRIBLE shippers, if yours is in bad shape, you will know when you open the bag. The smell of Xenia dying off is nasty.

The one I got had this smell and some tissue on it was in bad shape (not due to MR. Coral) it took a bit of time but has bounced back. It still has'nt colored up and the polyps don't open much, but it is growing.

Good luck with it.

In this pic you can see it sending off a new stalk on the bottom right. this will detach itself soon and be a new coral

This is about 2-3 weeks later

Does xena grow locally in Hawaii. If not you can never know the out come it will have in that local environment. It can grow out of control if it does not have natural predator to keep in check. When I had that stuff in my tank it grew like crazy. It does not like super clean water.

That frag guy creeps me out! Why does he always post pictures of himself dressed like that?

i hope my xenia does that too.. i've had it a couple of days ago. it still haven't opened up fully. even though it's not opening up i see them branch out quick. i had 4 stalk's. but now they start to split like crazy. i think there are like 10 branches now...
